Dental Implant vs. Bridge: Which Is Right for You?

Two solutions, one missing tooth

When you lose a tooth, chewing gets harder, neighboring teeth start shifting, and your smile changes. Both dental implants and bridges fix this — but the way they do it is fundamentally different.

How a bridge works

A bridge fills the gap using the two teeth on either side of it as anchors. Those teeth are shaped down and capped with crowns, and a false tooth is fused between them. It's a faster process and typically costs less upfront.

How an implant works

An implant replaces the entire tooth, including the root — a titanium post is placed into the jawbone, which fuses with the bone over a few months, then a crown is attached on top. Neighboring teeth are left completely untouched.

The key trade-offs

Bridges are faster (often 2 visits) and cost less initially, but they require reshaping healthy neighboring teeth, and the bridge itself typically needs replacement after 10–15 years.

Implants cost more upfront and take longer (a few months, due to healing time), but they don't affect neighboring teeth, feel and function most like a natural tooth, and can last a lifetime with proper care.

Which one is right for you?

If you want the fastest, more affordable fix and your neighboring teeth already need crowns anyway, a bridge often makes sense. If you want a long-term, standalone solution and are comfortable with a longer timeline, an implant is usually the better investment.
