Gum Disease: Early Signs You Shouldn't Ignore
Gum disease is more common than people realize
Many adults have some degree of gum disease without knowing it, largely because the early stage — gingivitis — often causes no pain at all. That's exactly what makes it dangerous: it progresses silently.
Sign 1: Bleeding when you brush or floss
This is the single most common early sign, and also the most commonly dismissed. Bleeding gums are not a normal part of brushing — they indicate inflammation, not "brushing too hard."
Sign 2: Red, swollen, or tender gums
Healthy gums are firm and pale pink. Gums that look puffy, dark red, or feel tender to touch are showing signs of active inflammation.
Sign 3: Persistent bad breath
Bacteria buildup below the gumline produces odor that regular brushing and mouthwash can't fully mask — persistent bad breath despite good oral hygiene is a red flag.
Sign 4: Gums pulling away from teeth
As gum disease advances, gums can recede, making teeth look longer and creating pockets where bacteria collect — this stage (periodontitis) is harder to reverse than early gingivitis.
Sign 5: Loose or shifting teeth
In advanced gum disease, the bone and tissue supporting teeth weakens, and teeth can become loose or visibly shift position — at this stage, tooth loss becomes a real risk.
The good news: early stages are reversible
Gingivitis, the early stage, can typically be fully reversed with professional scaling and improved home care. This is why regular scaling and check-ups matter even when nothing seems wrong.
What to do next
